It aims to collect, organise, and openly share information on this topic, and to foster new developments, exchanges, and research.
It has been over a century and a half since the deployment of the first design policy, at that time in the form of a ‘design and crafts society’, emerging at the end of the First Industrial Revolution and start of the Second one. Since then, society has changed dramatically, and so has design. Along the way, design policies have been deployed at different paces, in various locations, and in diverse formats. In order to capture the diversity of initiatives taking place around the world, we have devised a general definition for ‘design policies’:
Design policies are a set of strategic and operational guidelines deployed by public organisations, where design is a fundamental feature in their reasoning.
And while still a niche in the overall public policies landscape, there has been a continuous increased production on design policies, along with relevant knowledge that is worth sharing. In turn, we also hope that this library can provoke new discussions, as it helps locate and access a variety of documentation that has been so far available and/or referenced in various places.
If you are aware and/or possess relevant information on design policies, such as policy documents, research papers, presentations, studies, position papers, events, websites, documentaries, etc., please send them through.
Whenever possible, we will make that same information available on this website as an open-access PDF. Nevertheless, we are also aware that not all information may be openly available (i.e. research papers). In such cases, we will only place the corresponding URL.
Ideally, when sending through relevant information, please indicate, whenever applicable:
